Angelo Dundee

1921-2012

and died  February 1, 2012 (aged 90) in Tampa, Florida.

Born in Philadelphia to Italian parents, Dundee served in WWII as an airplane mechanic. Dundee went to New York then Miami where he learned many of the strategies of a boxer's cornerman while acting as a "bucket man" to the great trainers of Stillman's Gym. There, his mentors included Charlie Goldman, Ray Arcel and Chickie Ferrera. Later, his brother Chris Dundee opened the 5th St. Gym here in Miami.

Famous for helping Ali with his first fight with Sonny Liston, Ali was ready to quit because he was blinded by Team Liston, Angelo stayed cool to guide his champion through the difficult round. he is also famous for telling Sugar Ray Leanord "You're blowing it kid" giving him the impetus to come back and stop Tommy Hearns a few rounds later.

He helped former Ali foe George Foreman as he trained him and was in the corner for "Big" George to win the Heavyweight Championship at age 45, a record that still stands to this day. He retired in Tampa and his later years where spend time with his wife Helen, and his kids, grandkids, watching Boxing, and visiting his gym here in Miami Beach regularly to be around the fighters. He was inducted into the International Hall of Fame in 1992. he died peacefully in his home February 2012. Muhammad Ali,  as well as many champions attended his funeral.
